ATELIER ÉTANT DONNÉ
7 rue du Courtieu, 30000 Nîmes

How to get there?
Clara Nebinger, La Mer était noire ce jour-là, 2023. Acrylic and scotch tape on canvas.

As part of the 1st Contemporaine de Nîmes, Atelier Étant donné welcomes two artists, Clara Nebinger and Noureddine Benhamed, graduates of ésban – École supérieure des beaux-arts de Nîmes, for research and creative residencies between April and June 2024.

Echoing the theme of the triennial, Étant donné has chosen to question the posture of the contemporary artist, between filiation and/or rupture. Through the practice of these two artists, and in particular their respective approaches to the notion of landscape, the subjects of inheritance or rupture, filiation, transmission or artistic innovation will be addressed.

The artists :

Clara Nebinger

Born in 1995, Clara Nebinger lives and works in Lyon. A graduate of ésban – École supérieure des beaux-arts de Nîmes in 2020, she has had several group exhibitions, notably at Galerie Arti (Marseille), Maison d’artiste de Céreste-en-Lubéron and Centre d’Accueil de Demandeurs d’Asile de Toulon, in partnership with the contemporary art space Vidéochroniques (Toulon). She works with contemporary landscapes, whether real, imaginary or memorial, between abstraction and figuration. The landscape is represented, multiplied, dilated or associated with photography, eager for images in motion.

Noureddine Benhamed

Born in 1984, Noureddine Benhamed lives and works between Algeria and France. His work has recently been shown in solo and collective exhibitions at Les Halles Tropisme (Montpellier), Le lieu multiple (Montpellier), Centre Culturel Algérien (Paris) and La Conciergerie (La Motte-Servolex). Noureddine Benhamed’s work falls somewhere between collecting, intervening in the images he selects and recomposing, with a poetic and critical dimension. He is also interested in the image within cinematographic language and its sequencing, cuts and ruptures.

The structure

Étant donné is an association created in 2012, with the aim of promoting creative professionals, raising public awareness on art and culture, and encouraging challenging contemporary creation.

To carry out its actions, the association has a workshop set up in the heart of Nîmes, in the Îlot Littré district. It’s both a multi-purpose production space that welcomes artists all year round, and a place for exchanging, sharing, exhibiting and learning about screen printing. It also hosts artistic residencies, exhibitions and gatherings of artists and the public.
