CARRÉ D’ART LIBRARY – JEAN BOUSQUET
Place de la Maison Carrée, 30000 Nîmes

How to get there?
Prune Phi, Otherworld Communication, 2022. Performance, Magasin CNAC, Grenoble, 2023.

A fictional company, Otherworld Communication, takes up residence in the heart of the Carré d’Art Library – Jean Bousquet. It offers an intergenerational communication service between the living and the dead, consisting in the manufacture of votive cardboard telephones containing a message of one’s choice. They can then be activated by fire, in order to be sent to departed loved ones. Relying on funeral rites performed in Vietnam and its diaspora, artist Prune Phi presents a vast interactive installation and performance project. It was conceived with the participation of users from various libraries of the city and Nîmes secondary school students, and in collaboration with SMITH, who created a series of light signals to accompany the experience. This project is in line with the two artists’ ongoing research into altered states of consciousness, the evolution of ancestral traditions in conjunction with new technologies, and forms of relationship with the beyond.
