Pierre Soulages, French artist and engraver, was born in Rodez in 1919 and died in Nîmes in 2022. Since the late 1940s, he has been associated with abstract art, known in particular for his use of the color black. He attained international success from the late 1950s, and is renowned in particular for the hundred or so stained-glass windows he created between 1987 and 1994 for the Abbey Church of Conques. The Soulages Museum was inaugurated in Rodez on May 30, 2014. It houses the largest collection by the artist, whose works have also been acquired by nearly 110 museum institutions worldwide.
